5/28/2020 7b Dme Activation Map Cooling Sensor
Fault recurs, the DME control unit must be replaced. 1212 Lambda (O2) Sensor 2 This code is stored when the engine temperature is 70C and the Oxygen Sensor value is out of range or not present. Check the Oxygen Sensor wiring and the operation of the sensor. I have a 2000 BMW E46 that is going into limp mode constantly. I took it to a BMW mechanic and they ran the Diagnostic Trouble Code and came up with Code 7B DME: Activation, Map Cooling. I have a bmw 328I 1999 just replaced the trottle body and sensor mass air flow sensor and a new battery the transmission kept going into defaut mode.
![]() Where to Start?
The Motronic ignition system is a pretty interesting system and as our cars get older, we'll probably find ourselves having to fiddle with little failures. The DME temp sensor (aka Temp II) is one of them. Essentially this little sensor provides the Motronic computer with a sense of engine temperature. That information helps to manage the engine by providing a richer mixture of fuel to air in cold situations. It is critical and in an extreme failure can actually cause the engine to run extremely rich, die and not restart.
Read about how to troubleshoot the DME Temp 2 sensor within the theDME/KLR test plan. That plan was devised for the 944 Turbo but the temp II sensor is common to all 944s.
Here's a link to test plan.
About the Temp II Sensor![]()
It is a $20 part, so most times we just change it but here is how you might go about testing one if you so choose.
First, the temp sensor can be removed without draining the coolant. Its best to have an old one to quick slip in place of the one you're removing though to prevent slow draining of the some coolant.
First a good rinse, then into some luke-warm water.

Bringing up the water temps and observing the resistance.
As the water temp increased, both my old and new sensor resistance reading changed.
Conclusion, both sensors are good.
